چکیده

We present a synthesis of physical effects influencing the observed lightcurve of an extrasolar giant planet (EGP) transiting its host star. The synthesis includes a treatment of Rayleigh scattering , cloud scattering, refraction, and molecular absorption of starlight in the EGP atmosphere. Of these effects, molecular absorption dominates in determining the transit-derived radius R, for planetary orbital radii less than a few AU. Using a generic model for the atmosphere of EGP HD209458b, we perform a fit to the best available transit lightcurve data, and infer that this planet has a radius at a pressure of 1 bar, R 1 , equal to 94430 km, with an uncertainty of ∼ 500 km arising from plausible uncertainties in the atmospheric temperature profile. We predict that R will be a function of wavelength of observation, with a robust prediction of variations of at least ±1% at infrared wavelengths where H 2 O opacity in the high EGP atmosphere dominates.

The physical bases of the detection and characterisation of extrasolar planets in the reflected light and thermal emission regimes are reviewed. They both have their advantages and disadvantages, including artefacts, in the determination of planet physical parameters (mass, size, albedo, surface and atmospheric conditions etc. A special attention is paid for Earth-like planets and new perspecti...

Transits of bright stars offer a unique opportunity to study the detailed properties of extrasolar planets that cannot be determined through radial-velocity observations. We propose all-sky small-aperture transit surveys as the best way to find such systems. We derive a general formula for the number of stars that can be probed for such systems as a function of the characteristics of the star, ...

By analogy with the minimum-mass solar nebula, we construct a surfacedensity profile using the orbits of the 26 precise-Doppler planets found in multiple-planet systems: Σ = 2200 g cm (a/1 AU), where a is the circumstellar radius and β = 2.0 ± 0.5. The minimum-mass solar nebula (β = 1.5) is consistent with this model, but the uniform-α accretion disk model (β ≈ 1) is not. In a nebula with β < 2...
